Holistic Healing

When we first heard about skin rolling (AKA micro-needling), we were like many people, skeptical! However, after educating ourselves and understanding its “principle”, it makes perfect sense. The human body is a self-healing organism. This means it has the most amazing ability to naturally heal itself. With an estimated number of 30+ trillion, cells work tirelessly every second of every day and run on autopilot to heal, support, sustain and balance your body throughout your life. Take a moment to reflect on how your body heals itself - your liver and intestines regenerate, your bones grow back, your lungs heal...Just think about the incredible, miraculous phenomenon of childbirth! Your skin is no different, and the process of how it repairs and heals itself after a wound is just amazing.

Now, let’s get into skin rolling. What is it? How does it work? What are the benefits? It’s actually very simple. We found this fun and interesting celebrity explanation:

“Google it! It's great… it’s like a little wheel that has little pins, like acupuncture needles in a way, and you roll it and it stimulates your collagen and it also allows your products to seep into the skin…”

- Jennifer Aniston

Skin rolling is one of the healthiest treatments you can give yourself. It promotes a natural holistic healing process, by activating and stimulating the skin to perform its natural functions. The process (procedure) uses tiny needles to gently puncture the very first layer of skin. This prompts the skin to heal, repair and rejuvenate itself, by boosting collagen production, skin tissue and cellular turnover - as well as producing growth factors and improving cellular communication. Most people notice results almost immediately. However, it’s important to note that these results are cumulative, which means that, with regular use, they will improve over time. Just like going to the gym! That’s why we call it the ultimate workout for your skin.

Skin rolling is available in two versions: 1) as a professional derma-rolling treatment (service) and 2) in retail format for home care. Professional derma-rolling treatments are offered in clinics (or spas), they go deeper (0.5 mm - 1.0 mm in depth) and can only be performed by certified skincare professionals. They are less frequent (4-12 weeks apart, depending on your age and skin condition) and strategically support and rebuild collagen. Home rollers tackle the surface at a more shallow epidermal level (0.2 mm - 0.3 mm) and effectively work to protect and regenerate new cells.  Home rollers are recommended to either support a professional derma-rolling treatment or as an alternative therapy for those who want to heal, prevent and improve their skin holistically - from the comfort of their home. Both variations are very effective and are recommended, based on your personal skin condition and goals.

Here are a few important things you should know about home rolling:

  • We recommend incorporating skin rolling into your evening routine, as you would when brushing your teeth. The skin repairs and rejuvenates during the night, therefore, it’s the ideal time to increase circulation and enhance nutrient-intake
  • Roll on clean skin only. We recommend a double-cleanse to be sure your skin is free of all impurities (makeup, pollution, etc.)
  • Skin rolling does not hurt. In fact, it feels similar to a rough exfoliating scrub. At first, the sensation will be quite noticeable, however, over time, as the skin adjusts and becomes healthier, the sensation diminishes
  • Your skin will get red, especially at first. This is also another reason why it’s recommended you use it at night
  • We recommend 6-10 passes vertically and 6-10 passes horizontally for the entire surface of the problem area. Work in small sections and work your way around the contours of the areas being rolled.  Your pressure should be gentle and even (you should feel it).  Don’t drag the roller when you pass from one area to the next
  • We recommend you start slowly (once or twice a week). As your skin acclimates, increase frequency.  It is safe to do it every evening. However, most people like to alternate every second day. Do what feels most comfortable for you and work your way up.  Consistency is key!
  • Less is more! Don’t be fooled by a high quantity of needles, as the more there is, the less effective, the roller will be. There needs to be enough space between the micro tips to properly reach their full depth. The ideal number of micro tips is 175 to 220, which adequately covers the area while also allowing enough space in between
  • Skincare is essential and, in order to achieve the full benefits of skin rolling, two things are required: 1) the stimulation of the skin and 2) the nourishing properties of the skincare. The mechanical action of rolling can cause moisture to evaporate from your skin and it’s completely normal to experience dryness. You can counteract this by applying a hydrating, nutrient-rich product. We highly recommend the Essential Face Oil
  • Generally, a home roller will last 3-6 months, depending on how often you use it, the size and areas of the body that are rolled, the number of passes the roller has made and the care you give it. Similar to a razor, the micro-tips will dull over time
  • If you drop or bang your skin roller, throw it out immediately, as damaged micro-tips can seriously damage your skin
  • The best way to clean your roller is with alcohol (tip: buy a spray bottle and apply after each use)
  • Don’t roll on eyelids, lips, genitalia or nipples
  • You can gently roll the under the eyes, but proceed carefully and slowly around this delicate area
  • Everyone can use it and it’s recommended for all Fitzpatrick Scales
  • We recommend using mineral-based makeup, which can be safely applied the morning after your evening skin-rolling routine
  • Don’t share your roller. It's for personal use only
  • ALWAYS wear sunscreen (SPF minimum 30)
