Fall Into Hygge: Decorating, DIY Projects, and Outdoor Ideas for Autumn

“Hygge” – creating a warm and cozy atmosphere while enjoying the small things with people you care about. This is a Danish concept practiced all year round. However, it has an extra special meaning in the fall and winter.

Let’s shift our perspective; instead of feeling down that the days aren’t as long and the sun isn’t as warm, choose to create moments that feel good in our souls, paying careful attention to what lights us up.

In honour of this beautiful season, let’s dive deeper into what we must do to feel our best during this seasonal change.

1. Setting our space for the occasion

Autumn comes with cooler and crisp days, making it the perfect time to clean out your spaces and redefine them. Adding soy candles to light up the room with a scent that strikes up a feeling of a cozy Sunday is a must. As candles have become all the craze, there are a variety of healthy options to choose from to ensure you’re not inhaling toxic chemicals. Look for beeswax, soy or coconut bases for the best options. In addition, add in a cozy throw blanket and rug to set the mood. If you are looking to invest in a bigger project,  getting warmer decorative lamps and accent pieces that have that fall flare can be a fun way to decorate! Whether you choose a pumpkin pillow or a decorative piece, it will give you extra dopamine when walking into your space.

    2. A creative evening

Spending an evening with friends and family trying out creative projects with a nicely lit candle screams fall. Grab a couple of mini white pumpkins, dried flowers, and some paint to create the perfect aesthetic pumpkin! (This trend has been all over the internet and is undoubtedly worth the hype). Add a charcuterie, cheese board, and a nice glass of wine (or mocktail!) to pair and have an evening celebrating this season's debut. If painting is not your style, collaging a fall mood board can be another way to get into the fall energy without getting your hands dirty. Grab pictures, stickers, scrap paper, and anything else that inspires you, and get glueing!

    3. Spend time in the outdoors

This is the best time to be outdoors. Cozy knit sweaters, warm drinks, and cool air with beautiful leaves changing colours will make you feel like the world is slowing down just a bit. Going for walks in nearby parks or heading up north for a hike signifies what a beautiful time of year to enjoy mother nature. For something closer to the city, head over to Mount Royal for a simple afternoon stroll, or for those on the adventurous side, Mount Orford has some beautiful views!

There are a variety of activities and fun events to look forward to during the fall season.  Even though we need to say goodbye to summer, it is still possible to make each moment exciting and memorable. After all, there’s something undeniably special about the warmth that autumn brings — both in the world around us and in our hearts.

    Until next time,

    Tiffany
