Preconception Preparation: Giving Your Child the Healthiest Start Possible

Preconception Preparation: Giving Your Child the Healthiest Start Possible

In my opinion, preconception preparation is one of the most overlooked topics in health care today.

We spend so much time talking about pregnancy, labour, and caring for a newborn, yet very little attention is given to what happens before conception. The truth is that giving our children the healthiest possible start begins long before pregnancy. It begins with the health of both parents.

I know that planning a pregnancy a year in advance is not always possible, but if circumstances allow, I encourage both mother and father to prepare their bodies well before trying to conceive. After all, we are creating life, and the environment in which that life begins matters.

I often refer to this environment as the terrain.

A healthy, balanced terrain begins in the gut. Our microbiome—the trillions of bacteria living primarily in our digestive tract—plays a profound role in digestion, immunity, inflammation, and overall health. The quality of this terrain can influence everything from nutrient absorption to immune function.

The goal is to create a clean, nourishing internal environment before conception.

Diet Is the Foundation

Diet is perhaps 90% of achieving optimal health.

I encourage an 80/20 approach: approximately 80% alkaline-forming foods and 20% cooked foods each day. This means focusing on foods that are alive and rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes.

Think:

  • Fresh fruits

  • Vegetables

  • Sprouts

  • Herbs

  • Seeds

  • Nuts (if tolerated)

  • Wild fish

  • Organic and free-range chicken and turkey and eggs

  • Lean, well-sourced beef

Hydration is equally important. Pure water and herbal teas support elimination and help maintain a healthy terrain.

Natural sweeteners such as local raw honey and pure maple syrup may be enjoyed in moderation.

Foods and Substances to Avoid

When preparing for pregnancy, I recommend reducing or avoiding:

  • Cow's dairy

  • Alcohol

  • Excess caffeine

  • Wheat and highly processed grains

  • Pork

  • Refined sugars

  • Seed oils

  • Ultra-processed foods

  • Artificial fragrances

  • Plastics and endocrine-disrupting chemicals

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to reduce the body's toxic burden.

A Closer Look at Cow's Dairy

Cow's milk was designed by nature to nourish a rapidly growing calf, not a human being.

Many people struggle with dairy, whether because of lactose, the milk sugar, or sensitivity to milk proteins such as casein. Digestive discomfort, congestion, bloating, and skin issues are commonly reported in susceptible individuals.

Modern dairy is also processed and pasteurized. While pasteurization improves food safety, it changes the food from its natural state.

For many people, there are other nutrient-dense foods that may be easier to digest and utilize.

Alcohol and Fertility

Alcohol deserves special attention when discussing preconception health.

The liver is one of the body's primary detoxification organs and plays a major role in hormone metabolism. Excess alcohol places additional demands on the liver and may affect overall health.

What About Caffeine?

I love a good cup of shade-grown organic coffee. However, moderation is important.

High caffeine intake may affect sleep quality, stress hormones, and hydration status. Since sleep and hormonal balance are crucial during the preconception period, it is wise to be mindful of caffeine consumption.

If choosing coffee, quality matters.

Is Nausea During Pregnancy Really "Normal"?

Many women are told that nausea during pregnancy is simply part of the experience.

While it is certainly common, I often ask the question: should it be considered normal?

From a naturopathic perspective, the body's ability to digest, eliminate, and support liver function plays an important role in overall well-being. The liver works tirelessly to process hormones and filter substances from the body.

Supporting digestion and liver health before conception may help create a stronger foundation for pregnancy.

Beyond Food: Reducing Environmental Toxins

Health is not only about what we eat.

It is also about what we breathe, drink, and put on our skin.

Fragrances, plastics, cleaning products, and personal care items may contain chemicals that add to the body's overall burden. Whenever possible, choose cleaner alternatives.

The Gift of Preparation

Preconception preparation is not about perfection.

It is about giving future generations the best possible start.

By nourishing the body with real food, reducing toxic exposures, supporting digestion, and creating a healthy terrain, we are investing not only in our own health but in the health of our children.

After all, the journey toward wellness begins long before birth.
