You see, when the outside air is colder, you turn up the heat in your home and the air is much drier. Consequently, your skin is affected and has very different needs to be catered to.
In order to keep your skin healthy and protected all year long, we’ve created the ultimate seasonal guide with tips that all top dermatologists swear by. Whenever cooler weather comes around, here's what they advise:
OBSERVE.
The first thing you need to do is note how your skin reacts to colder weather.
While we usually swap heavier products for lightweight and breathable ones in the summer, our skin tends to need a little extra moisture and TLC In colder temps. Notice how your skin reacts and let it guide you towards products that are best for you.
MOISTURIZING IS KEY.
Colder temperatures dry out the skin, so it's a good idea to swap your gel cleansers for cream ones in the fall and winter. They contain ingredients that are much more hydrating than their counterparts.

When going from summer to fall (as we are now!) you’ll want to reach for a heavier daily moisturizer. Not only do they protect your skin from harsh conditions such as freezing wind chills, but they also form a healthy barrier that helps prevent wrinkles over time.

According to Jessica Krant, M.D. and dermatologist at Laser & Skin Surgery Center NYC, retinol (a catchall term for topical products containing vitamin A) increases the cellular turnover rate of the cells on the outermost layer of our skin.
In other words: they keep younger, plumper cells closer to the skin's surface and help accelerate the natural exfoliation process, which helps unclog pores.

EXFOLIATE.
There are many reasons why exfoliation is crucial during chillier times.
Firstly, between the fall air and your indoor heating, your skin cells will dehydrate and die out faster. You'll want to remove debris and the dead skin cells that linger on your skin in order for newer, healthier ones to replace them.
Secondly, dead skin cells inhibit the proper absorption of your products, meaning you won't get all the benefits of your moisturizer if it can't fully penetrate your skin.
Lastly, dead skin cells increase skin irritation—so get exfoliating!
