HOW TO ADAPT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE WITH THE CHANGE OF SEASON

Longer nights, sweater weather, and pumpkin-flavoured everything…the seasons are changing, and so should your skincare routine!

You see, when the outside air is colder, you turn up the heat in your home and the air is much drier. Consequently, your skin is affected and has very different needs to be catered to.

In order to keep your skin healthy and protected all year long, we’ve created the ultimate seasonal guide with tips that all top dermatologists swear by. Whenever cooler weather comes around, here's what they advise:

OBSERVE.

The first thing you need to do is note how your skin reacts to colder weather.

While we usually swap heavier products for lightweight and breathable ones in the summer, our skin tends to need a little extra moisture and TLC In colder temps. Notice how your skin reacts and let it guide you towards products that are best for you.

MOISTURIZING IS KEY.

Colder temperatures dry out the skin, so it's a good idea to swap your gel cleansers for cream ones in the fall and winter. They contain ingredients that are much more hydrating than their counterparts.

GLO SKIN BEAUTY

PHYTO-ACTIVE CREAM CLEANSER $60

When going from summer to fall (as we are now!) you’ll want to reach for a heavier daily moisturizer. Not only do they protect your skin from harsh conditions such as freezing wind chills, but they also form a healthy barrier that helps prevent wrinkles over time.

If you have an oily complexion, oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas are what you’ll want to reach for. Extra-dry skin types should opt for something that contains heavy-duty moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

VITAMIN C & RETINOL ARE YOUR WINTER BFFs.

During this seasonal transition, we suggest using an antioxidant-rich vitamin C serum to brighten up and even out your overall complexion. Good-bye, hyperpigmentation! These serums will minimize the appearance of the dark spots that appeared after all that extra time in the sun.

ZO SKIN HEALTH

10% VITAMIN C SERUM $128

BABOR

VITAMIN C SERUM $99

According to Jessica Krant, M.D. and dermatologist at Laser & Skin Surgery Center NYC, retinol (a catchall term for topical products containing vitamin A) increases the cellular turnover rate of the cells on the outermost layer of our skin.

In other words: they keep younger, plumper cells closer to the skin's surface and help accelerate the natural exfoliation process, which helps unclog pores.

The combination of retinol and vitamin C is extremely powerful in reviving your skin's youth, undoing damage from UV rays, and helping you overcome skin conditions such as acne. If there's one thing you should invest in, it's this!

EXFOLIATE.

There are many reasons why exfoliation is crucial during chillier times.

Firstly, between the fall air and your indoor heating, your skin cells will dehydrate and die out faster. You'll want to remove debris and the dead skin cells that linger on your skin in order for newer, healthier ones to replace them.

Secondly, dead skin cells inhibit the proper absorption of your products, meaning you won't get all the benefits of your moisturizer if it can't fully penetrate your skin.

Lastly, dead skin cells increase skin irritation—so get exfoliating!

DON'T SKIP THE SPF.

We'll keep this one brief. In case you didn't already know, SPF protection is just as important in wintertime—ultraviolet rays are present all year round and are highly reflective off of snow and ice. They also penetrate windows, so don't skimp out on the SPF—your future self will thank you!

CONSULT.

A common piece of skincare advice is to get a facial every season (AKA, 4 times a year). While this is stellar advice and we're all for it, we understand it can be a costly and time-consuming option.

A cost-effective swap can be to book your virtual consultation with one of our skin care professionals. By respecting your budget and assessing your needs, we will gladly redirect you towards the best products for your skin situation. It’s what we do best! Learn more.

On that note, we guarantee that following these tips during the fall and winter season will leave you with that constant, fresh-from-the-spa glow.

Until next time, take care of the skin you're in!
