The 7 Things Your Body Needs Before You Need Another Supplement
This is probably the most important blog I have ever written, and I truly hope it gets into many minds. We have become so caught up in the latest health trends, supplements, peptides, powders and pills that we have forgotten the basics. We are constantly looking for something new to add to our routine when perhaps what our body really needs is for us to get back to what nature intended.
If you can put these next seven steps into your daily practice, I believe you will be giving your body the foundation it needs for optimal health and longevity. No need to immediately gravitate toward trending supplements, peptides, creatine and all the other products making big promises today. Try these seven steps for the next 21 days. Make them a habit. Pay attention to how you feel, how you sleep, how you digest, how you move and how much energy you have. You may be surprised by how much difference the basics can make.
1. Eat real, whole food.
This sounds so simple, yet it has become incredibly complicated. I want you to look at what you are putting into your body and ask yourself, "Is this actually food?" Focus on fresh, whole, preferably organic foods and minimize refined sugar, highly processed foods, artificial ingredients and foods that have been heavily altered from their natural state. Fresh fruits and vegetables, quality protein, healthy fats, and seeds should form the foundation of your diet. If you eat animal protein, I encourage you to know where it comes from and choose the highest quality you can. Your body needs nutrients, not a long list of ingredients that you cannot pronounce. And remember my favourite saying: we are not what we eat, we are what we digest.
2. Drink clean, pure water.
Water is one of the most basic things our bodies need, yet so many people spend their day drinking coffee, energy drinks, alcohol, soft drinks and highly flavoured beverages and wonder why they don't feel well. Your body needs water for virtually every physiological process, including digestion, circulation and elimination. Make clean water your primary beverage and stay properly hydrated throughout the day. Herbal teas can also be a wonderful addition. Don't make hydration complicated. Start with water.
3. Breathe fresh air and get outside.
We spend far too much time indoors surrounded by artificial environments. Open the windows, get outside and breathe fresh air whenever you can. Better yet, take yourself into nature. Walk through a forest, sit near the ocean, spend time in the mountains or simply find a beautiful park. Nature gives us something that no supplement can put into a bottle. At the same time, become more conscious of what you are breathing inside your home. Fragranced air fresheners, harsh cleaning products, candles and other airborne chemicals can all contribute to the chemical load in our environment. Clean up your indoor environment and make fresh air part of your daily routine.
4. Sleep and rest.
We cannot talk about longevity without talking about sleep. Your body does an incredible amount of repair and restoration while you sleep, yet we continue to push through exhaustion, stay up late and treat sleep as though it is optional. It isn't. Create a consistent bedtime routine and, whenever possible, aim to be in bed around 10 p.m. Give your body the opportunity to rest without constantly stimulating it with screens, work and stress. And remember that rest isn't only about sleeping. If your body is telling you that you are tired, listen. We have become very good at ignoring those signals.
5. Be conscious of what you put on your skin.
Your skin is your largest organ and everything we put on our body becomes part of our environment. Take a look at your soaps, lotions, shampoos, cosmetics, deodorants and cleaning products. Do you really know what is in them? I'm not suggesting that you need to throw everything away overnight, but start reading labels and gradually replace products containing unnecessary fragrances and ingredients with simpler alternatives. I also encourage natural, breathable fabrics whenever possible. Your skin is alive. Treat it with the same care you give the food you put into your body.
6. Move your body every single day.
This one is non-negotiable for me. You do not need a gym membership, expensive equipment or hours of free time. You simply need to move. Walk. Stretch. Lift weights. Use resistance bands. Dance. Garden. Cycle. Swim. Take the stairs. Your body was designed to move, and movement is essential for healthy aging. I especially encourage women and men to incorporate strength training because maintaining muscle is one of the most important things we can do as we age. But don't forget mobility, balance and cardiovascular fitness. Variety is the key. Find movement that you enjoy and make it part of your everyday life.
7. Reconnect with nature.
This may be the one we underestimate the most. Take your shoes off and feel the grass. Walk among the trees. Sit in the sunshine. Listen to birds. Swim in natural water. Watch the sunrise or sunset. Leave your phone behind and simply be present. We are living beings, and we are part of nature, yet so many of us have become completely disconnected from it. Spending time outdoors can help us slow down, reduce stress and reconnect with ourselves. It doesn't cost anything, and you don't need an appointment.
So there you have it. Seven simple things. No complicated protocol. No expensive stack of supplements. No new trend to chase.
For the next 21 days, I challenge you to make these seven habits part of your everyday life. Eat real food. Drink clean water. Breathe fresh air. Sleep and rest. Be conscious of what you put on your skin. Move your body. Reconnect with nature.
Then ask yourself how you feel.
Sometimes the most powerful health transformation isn't about adding something new. It's about getting back to the basics.
That, to me, is the real path to longevity.
