4 Mistakes That Age Your Skin
There is an endless amount of things that cause our skin to age, with the most notable cause of them all being (evidently!) time. However, there are many extrinsic factors that can contribute to accelerated photoaging or the destruction of the precious molecules that keep our skin plump and glowing.
Here are some things to watch out for in order to protect your skin for the long run:
SKIPPING THE SPF
It’s straightforward and it’s simple: UV rays are the single biggest culprit in aging skin. Over time, the sun’s light destroys our skin’s fibers (AKA elastin). Their breakdown causes the skin to sag, stretch, wrinkle, and lose its tightness.
To prevent such horrors, the easiest solution is to always apply an SPF of at least 30—rain or shine, and all year long! Sunscreen will not only prevent UVB sunburns, but also limit the photoaging (sun spots, fine lines, deep wrinkles, etc.) caused by UVA rays.

SLEEPING WITH MAKEUP
Forgetting to remove your makeup before bed (or worse, avoiding it entirely) is harmful to your skin. Not only does it clog pores and irritate the skin barrier, but it also dehydrates the skin; resulting in a dull, lackluster complexion that accentuates fine lines and wrinkles.
Despite Kim Kardashian’s recent claim about how sleeping with her makeup saves her time in the morning, we strongly advise against such!

POOR LIFESTYLE HABITS
Smoking, lack of sleep, excessive alcohol consumption and a diet riddled with fat and sugar can drastically affect the appearance of your skin. These factors can cause a wide spectrum of effects, ranging from dull and dehydrated skin to premature wrinkling. Not only can they make your skin appear older, but they also contribute to the degeneration of collagen––which means they literally make your skin age.
A balanced diet and drinking enough water can have a significant, positive impact on your complexion. Water, antioxidants, an adequate amount of protein as well as supplements catered to your needs keeps your skin looking its best for longer.
USING POOR QUALITY PRODUCTS
We’re not saying poor quality products cause aging, but……..
There is an immense difference between medical/cosmeceutical-grade products versus traditional mass-market retail cosmetic brands. Just because a brand is popular, doesn’t mean it works for you! These Cosmetic products can be great, but they can also be chock-full of harsh ingredients that break down the skin barrier and harm your acid mantle (the protective film of natural oils, amino acids, and sweat that covers your skin).
The best you can do for your skin––no matter its type––is to build a custom skincare routine that addresses your concerns and protects you from harmful factors that accelerate skin aging.
