Yes, you read that right: baby skincare is very important!

 

You see, a newborn’s skin is incredibly delicate. This means choosing the right products (formulated and adapted to a baby’s sensitive skin) is essential. Because a baby's immune system is also fragile, it is just as important to choose products that won’t trigger abnormal skin irritation, dryness, chafing, and rashes.

  

A few things to always keep in mind when caring for a newborn’s skin include:

 

• It's best to use skin care products that are made specifically for babies, such as fragrance-free and tear-free shampoos, soaps, creams, and lotions. With each use, make sure to keep an eye out for any allergic reactions.
• It's also important to keep a newborn's skin moisturized. Because of this, ointments are preferred––their thicker consistency makes them better at keeping your little one's skin soft.
• Perfumed, antibacterial, and deodorant soaps are too harsh for young children and should be avoided at least until they are toddlers!
• In general, babies younger than 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). However, you can apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 on small areas of the body, such as the face. Babies over 6 months exposed to sunlight should always wear a protective SPF.
