4 Oils You Need In Your Skincare

We LOVE oils, and for many great reasons. They smell amazing, they’re accessible, they contain powerful, hydrating ingredients, trap humectants and emollients onto your skin so that your skin can stay hydrated and soft throughout the day––and more!

 

Oils function as an occlusive (moisturizing ingredients that create a physical barrier on the skin to prevent transepidermal water loss) and as an emollient (moisturizing ingredients that soften the skin), which means they can either seal in moisture. They can be your best bet if you tend to struggle with dehydrated skin, especially during the colder months.

  

However, it is important to note they never act as a humectant. By putting this “sealant” on the skin by coating the top layer, they do not pull in water and hydrate the skin the same way as a serum would. If you apply oil first, any moisturizer that follows won’t be able to fully penetrate the oil barrier. Oils are only the protectors (not producers!) of hydration.
