5 SKINCARE MISTAKES TO LEAVE BEHIND IN 2020

When it comes to our skincare, we want it all. And more often than not, we’re ready to do anything to get there––which isn’t always a good thing. But because you DO deserve it all, we put together a quick guide to help you ditch the bad habits that aren’t benefiting your skin as we step into the New Year (at last!).

  1. STOP TAKING YOUR ADVICE FROM NON-REPUTABLE SOURCES

In this day and age, the answer to any of our skincare questions can be found at the tip of our fingers. In other words, it’s extremely easy to seek advice from someone in the beauty industry who isn’t necessarily a qualified professional. And while some people on the internet may be giving legitimate advice, most of the time it is something that works for them––which means their advice may not specifically suit your skin’s needs.

You wouldn’t take serious medical advice from anybody you meet on the street, right? Therefore, please (please!) understand that no one is better qualified to give the skincare guidance you need than a certified dermatologist or your trusted aesthetician.

  1. STOP USING SKINCARE PRODUCTS OUT OF ORDER

Not only is this a waste of your time and money, but it may even cause further damage to your skin. Following up on point #1, a ton of different people may recommend a ton of different steps, but there are general guidelines to follow when it comes to your skincare routine.

We made a super-simple and informative post about this on our Instagram page in order to give you a general idea of how your steps should go. Should you have any questions or concerns about your own routine, please don’t hesitate to book your Virtual Treatment with us and we’ll help you sort it out!

  1. STOP DISREGARDING SUNSCREEN

Imagine thinking your skin is stronger than the sun in 2021?!

Sunscreen isn’t limited to your beach trips or to the days you step outside. The number one reason your skin will age prematurely is due to the sun’s UVA/UVB rays—period. Therefore, sunscreen is an essential part of your daily skincare routine.

“Seventy-eight percent of the sun’s rays come from incidental exposure”, explains Dr. Shilesh Iyer, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist with the renowned New York Dermatology Group. This includes the moments when you are driving in your car, sitting near a window, or even walking outside on a cloudy day.

If you want to prevent wrinkles, wearing sunscreen 365 days a year––rain or shine, both inside or outside––is a must.

  1. STOP AGGRAVATING BLEMISHES

Picking at blemishes, applying spot treatments at the wrong phase of the breakout, and using wrong treatments are all part of the skincare mistakes we want to eradicate in 2021. All of these mishaps will result in longer-lasting blemishes, inflammation, redness, and even scarring that can linger for weeks.

If you are experiencing moderate to severe acne, we recommend consulting a skincare professional in order to properly treat your concerns. If you suffer from the occasional breakout (as we all do!), stick to the general rule of thumb: keep your hands off of your face. Most pimples will take care of themselves without you needing to pop them!

But if the damage is done, make sure not to apply any type of irritating product to the injured skin. Opt for a gentle moisturizer or an antibacterial treatment to avoid further complications, and make sure to keep protecting your skin with your regular SPF. The skin is also extra sensitive and vulnerable during this time, so you should stay away from products such as exfoliants or vitamin C serums.

  1. STOP NEGLECTING YOUR EYES AND NECK

Your eyes and neck deserve just as much TLC as the rest of your face does! Make sure to invest in a quality eye cream and to be incredibly gentle around the delicate skin that lies around your eyes.

When it comes to your neck area, take the time to properly cleanse it daily. This will ensure you get rid of the extra makeup or sunscreen that may linger and cause closed comedones. And lastly, we recommend using light, gentle upward strokes on the neck when you apply sunscreen and moisturizer. This can prevent premature skin sagging and wrinkles!

Happy New Year! 🥂
