BSE Spotlight: Intimate Shaving Tips

Shaving is a pretty intuitive practice. However, when it comes to shaving your intimate areas, you're dealing with a sensitive zone that requires you to keep a few tips in mind. With the goal of making sure you're shaving safely (and effectively!), here are a few staple tips for shaving your intimate area from start to finish.

 

PREP

 

The preparation is just as important as the process itself. Firstly, you’ll want to ensure that your skin is soft and smooth. We recommend cleansing and/or exfoliating the pubic area (we love the Nelly De Vuyst Cleansing Foam for this step) and if needed, giving your hair a trim. The easiest shave is when the hair is about ¼ of an inch long. 

 

Once gently exfoliated, you can apply a thin layer of shaving cream; and of course, one that is designed for the sensitive, intimate area. This way, you’ll avoid any irritation or the unbalancing of your vaginal flora.

 

DIRECTION

 

You can shave in any direction that feels comfortable for you. However, shaving downwards––AKA “with the grain”––will help to avoid excess irritation. Clean your razor in water every 2-3 strokes to keep your hair from blocking the blades. Rinse and repeat as you shave the parts of your pubic area that you wish to groom.

 

FINISHING

 

Once you are finishing shaving, we recommend applying a treatment serum to your intimate area to avoid irritation or ingrown hairs. Post-shaving, we suggest applying a moisturizer or an oil, preferably alcohol-free, to the shaved area. Soap and shaving can dry out your skin, so using a moisture source after a shave helps prevent itchy irritation and maintain the moisture your skin needs.
