Earth Day
In honor of Earth Day, we wanted to take the time to highlight the importance of taking care of our planet. Now more than ever, our climate crisis is critical. Did you know that in 2021, according to the international sustainability organization Global Footprint Network, we used 74% more resources than what the planet can remake?
Â
Such actions lead to important consequences such as the thinning of the ozone layer, AKA the part of the atmosphere that essentially shields the earth from the sun by absorbing some harmful UVB rays. You may think this has nothing to do with skincare, but if you think about it: the depletion of this layer means UVB exposure is increasing. It is more important than ever to wear proper SPF to protect your skin!
Â
In light of news like this, it is crucial for brands––no matter how big or how small––carry their weight and do their part when it comes to reducing plastic waste, reusing materials and supporting green initiatives.
Â
Not only do we always make a point to reuse all of the packaging materials we receive when shipping to customers, BSE is also a Vera-Certified company. Since 2020, we have committed to offset 10 plastic items from our oceans with every order placed.Â
Â
Vera is a membership-based platform that offers a simple, reliable way to offset your plastic footprint. They have partnered with Plastic Bank, a social enterprise committed to stopping ocean plastic while providing work opportunities in impoverished countries in the process.
Â
The less plastic in the ocean, the fewer ocean animals suffer. Also, less floating pollution means ingesting fewer microplastics in our food, water, and products—another one of the most pressing environmental issues of our lives!
Â
The process is simple: you purchase your favorite BSE products, and for each order you place, Vera prevents 10 plastic items from entering the oceans. You can even check out on their website the progress we have made: so far, we’ve helped offset 93,370 plastic items!Â
 Â
Asides from our own initiatives, many of the brands we carry are highly involved in environmental causes. For example, Vivier Skin makes a point to have sustainable business practices such as not testing on animals, using Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) packaging, minimizing waste, and using biodegradable microbeads in their products.
Â
Through their Forests for the Future initiative, Eminence Organics plants a tree for every retail product sold, allowing them to support communities in developing countries. In fact, Eminence Organics is the first and only skincare company to plant over 19 million trees!
Â
Nelly de Vuyst products are cruelty-free, fair-trade organic, as well as GMP and COSMOS® certified—the highest standard of certification available in the cosmetic industry. The COSMOS® certification guarantees that their products are truly organic.
 Â
While science tells us that the current climate situation has reached an ultimatum, it also tells us that it is not too late to turn things around. Through our collective efforts, proper knowledge and concrete commitments, we can aspire for a better, greener, and safer future.
Â
Until next time,
Â
