Exfoliation Basics

Exfoliation Basics

WHAT IS EXFOLIATION?

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, a method used to get rid of dry, dull, and flaky skin. Exfoliating also helps unclog your pores, preventing breakouts and irritation.

WHY SHOULD YOU EXFOLIATE?

When you exfoliate your skin on a regular basis, it better absorbs the skincare products you apply to it. Exfoliating also promotes circulation, helping with collagen production. Over time, eliminating any dry, flaky skin improves both the tone and texture of your complexion.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT EXFOLIATING?

There are quite a few ways to take up exfoliating. When it comes to the body, most gommage-type scrubs––like the GM Collin Sweet Gommage––work marvelously, even for sensitive skin types.

When it comes to the face, multiple options are available.

  1. Physical exfoliators work by physically removing the top layer of your dead skin cells by mechanical friction. This can be done with a face scrub or a face wash device. They are however not designed to be used daily, and some products containing microbeads are toxic to the environment. They are, however, a great exfoliating option for teenage skin…yet, not so great for the more sensitive skin types.
  2. Chemical exfoliators, on the other hand, work on a deeper, more gradual level. They break the bond between dead skin cells and are generally divided into 2 main categories: AHA and BHAs.

AHA can be found in the form of glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, tartaric acid, and citric acid. It is water-soluble, which means that it works only on the superficial layer of the skin. It has humectant properties, which means it helps to retain moisture on the skin & keep drying effects away––making it a great choice for those with dry or flaky skin.

BHAs, on the other hand, are found in salicylic acid. It is oil-soluble, which means that it can work deep into the skin––making it a favorite for those with oily and acne-prone skin.

WHO SHOULD EXFOLIATE?

The rhythm of exfoliation depends on your skin type as well as which technique you use. Dry or sensitive skin types can aim for 1-2 times a week, while oily skin types can go up to 3-4 times a week. Normal or combination skin types can find something in between.

Everyone should introduce a new exfoliating product (chemical or physical) gradually. Make sure to be patient with the changes in your skin, as you may experience some skin purging within the first 4 to 6 weeks!
