Natural Deodorants 101

Natural Deodorants 101

Choosing a natural deodorant over a conventional deodorant can have several benefits for both your health and the environment. If you’re looking at a panoply of great options to choose from and just need a little nudge, here are a few reasons why you might want to consider switching to a natural deodorant:

Maintaining a healthy microbiome.

The human body has a natural microbiome that includes beneficial bacteria that help protect against harmful pathogens. Conventional deodorants can disrupt this delicate balance by killing off both odor-causing and beneficial bacteria. Natural deodorants, on the other hand, are formulated to help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin.

This may alter the bodily perfume you’re used to smelling, but rest assured, once you stick to a natural deodorant that you like and your body gets used to the new, cleaner ingredients–your body will adapt.

Avoiding potentially harmful ingredients.

Conventional deodorants often contain ingredients such as aluminum, parabens, and phthalates, which have been linked to health concerns such as breast cancer, hormone disruption, and skin irritation. Natural deodorants, on the other hand, are typically free of these potentially harmful ingredients and use natural ingredients like baking soda, coconut oil, and essential oils to fight odor.

Reducing your environmental impact.

Many conventional deodorants come in plastic packaging that is not recyclable, contributing to plastic waste and pollution. Natural deodorants often come in more eco-friendly packaging, such as glass jars, cardboard tubes, or at least recyclable or refillable materials. Because they usually don’t test on animals and also use ingredients that are often sustainably sourced and biodegradable, it makes for a better, eco-conscious decision on all levels.

In conclusion…

Choosing a natural deodorant can be a healthier and more sustainable choice for both you and the environment. However, it's important to note that natural deodorants may not be as effective as conventional deodorants for everyone, so it may take some trial and error (and patience!) to find the right one for you. Luckily, we have some great options… ;)
