Slugging
If you’ve been scrolling on TikTok or browsing through Instagram lately, you’ve probably seen or heard about “slugging’”––an emerging skincare trend that has been taking over the web and actively promoted by Gen Z skin-fluencers.
While you’re probably wondering what in the world slugging is and why so many people are interested in trying it, we thought it would be best to give you a professional run-down of what it actually entails. And no, it has nothing to do with slugs (thank goodness).
Without further ado, here’s all you need to know about slugging:
WHAT IS SLUGGING?
Simply put, it involves thickly applying an overnight hydrating product––such as Vaseline or Aquafor––all over your face, giving it a slug-like appearance (hence, the name). The idea here is that because these products create a barrier, they’ll ensure your skin retains water and you’ll wake up with a well-hydrated, refreshed and plumped glow.
WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Like any skincare “hack”, slugging may work for you––or not. This can depend on many things: the weather outside, your hormones, your stress levels, and of course, your skin type. You won’t necessarily know unless you try it, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
- It is important to know your skin type before trying such “trends”. For example, slugging can exacerbate acne, so it should be avoided for those with oily skin or who are prone to breakouts. It can, however, soothe those who struggle with eczema, irritation, chapping, or severely dehydrated/sensitive skins.
- It is crucial that you cleanse and exfoliate before gooping anything over your face overnight. If you’re creating a dense barrier to lock in moisture, imagine the skincare disaster that awaits if you were to lock in dirt, bacteria, and makeup.
- Before trying such trends, ask yourself if your skin is really in dire need and whether or not you’ve tried everything else. We always recommend high-quality, medical-grade products for a wide variety of reasons, and we’ll always prioritize professional advice over TikTok trends.
If you haven’t reached the skin of your dreams yet, it may be because you just haven’t found the right combination of products for you. And luckily, we can help you with that!
WHY BE CAUTIOUS OF TIKTOK SKINCARE ADVICE
We won’t lie, we all love the platform for some good entertainment. Yet we would be remiss if we didn’t suggest a precautionary approach when it comes to taking skincare advice from TikTok. Multiple skincare influencers use the fast-paced, widespread platform in order to share their tips and secrets, but it is important to discern professional versus unprofessional advice.
It is important to keep in mind that not everything you see on the internet (sometimes invented with only the sole purpose of going viral) needs to be tried. Some skincare tricks go viral simply because they look cool, and not because they have any benefit. For example, the past trend involving the use of lubricant as a foundation primer (yes, you read that right!), is in no way a recommended practice!
