MASKNE
Maskne (AKA mascne) is a real thing and is caused by face masks. When you breathe under a face mask for extended periods, sweat, oil, humidity and bacteria get trapped and this is the ideal breeding ground for acne (clogged pores, blackheads, comedones, congestion, contact dermatitis, skin barrier dysfunction, etc.). Athletes often suffer from acne, which is triggered by excess heat, pressure, friction, stretching, occlusion and rubbing of the skin. It’s no surprise that wearing a face mask causes maskne - it’s the perfect environment.
According to Google Trends, since the end of March, and with the onset of COVID-19, searches for both “maskne” and “mascne” have increased substantially.
If you’ve noticed acne on specific areas covered by your face mask (such as your nose, cheeks and chin), it’s not just the result of anxiety surrounding COVID-19 - it’s what skincare experts are referring to as the new “maskne” (technically referred to as acne mechanica).
The good news is, there’s hope and there are ways to prevent and treat it. Prevention is key! So, when wearing a disposable mask, make sure to air it out often or replace it, whenever possible. If you’re wearing a reusable mask, make sure you wash it daily.
While wearing a face mask in public is essential, it’s important to remove it when you are home and/or not around people. This allows your skin to breathe. Don’t panic or become overly aggressive with your skin by over-cleansing or over-exfoliating. This will only exacerbate the issue and potentially make it worse. Be gentle and use products that are specific and that respect the delicate natural barrier of your skin.
