Morning Rituals That Change Everything: Start Habit Stacking Today
We’ve all heard of habit stacking: Identifying a current habit you do already throughout the day and then layering a new behaviour on top of it, intending to attain a specific intention. The beneficial psychology of this technique is based on the idea that if an individual consistently repeats a daily habit, inviting a new habit to build upon a previous one, the environment will change due to choice; thereby, new behaviours will be established.
If you are going to habit stack, I strongly suggest a simple morning routine.
The morning is a ritual, whether you are aware of it or not. You repeat basic actions unconsciously in preparation for the day. (ex. Brush your teeth). Is it possible to stack a habit, eventually a few, to up-level your energy while creating new connections in your brain to optimize your health and wellness?
If you want to create some form of change within your reality, you MUST make a different CHOICE. It is that simple, yet paradoxically, it can be so difficult as our mammalian brains keep us habitual and safe in the known. If you choose to attend to your patterning and take an actionable step in the morning, you are setting the intention for the day to be productive, optimistic, motivated, successful and mindful, all of which are of high vibrational frequencies. And if you study energy, as I do, like resonates with like: What you choose to emanate into your experience, that same energy will return to you like kind. It’s physics.
The task of a morning routine should begin very incremental, so that you incorporate the habit daily and at no point feel overwhelmed or pressed for time. So I dare you to choose a basic action you practice every morning and commit today to a new intentional routine. Take one of my suggestions below and stack it with your already ingrained daily actions. (I promise you have at least 10 minutes if you choose not to look at your phone). Remember, small habits create significant changes.
Drink lemon water before coffee
While you sleep, your body is detoxifying so watch the benefits of drinking something alkaline before you drink the acid.
Read a self-improvement book while drinking your matcha
By doing so, you are incorporating mindfulness into your life. You will actually enjoy your hot beverage and will absorb and embody a few sentences of what you have read, I swear.
Meditate before you get out of bed
Quieting the nervous system before the day begins ensures less reactivity throughout the day when difficulty arises.
Movement before you shower
Any form of movement shakes the fascia, inviting endorphins to be released. Movement is medicine. If we can begin the day with endorphins, we can optimize our vitality and get that coveted glow.
Dry brush before you shower
Dry brushing before you shower will boost your circulation and stimulate your lymphatic system, detoxifying the body.
Listen to podcasts instead of music during your morning commute
You will get out of your subconscious, programmed mind and stimulate your consciousness, enhancing self-improvement, empowerment and productivity.
Journal and schedule your day before you brush your teeth
Writing down your thoughts, especially in the morning, provokes one to call in gratitude and intention for the day ahead. Take time to write down your tasks; at the end of the day, you will behold a sense of accomplishment as you cross it all off.
I promise your personality creates your personal reality. So, if you want to change, make a different choice this morning.
