New Year, New Skin Goals

Here we go again! Skin goals, version 2023.

The start of a new year is always a great time to take inventory of your habits and switch up what isn’t working for you anymore. Therefore, there’s no better time to spice up your skincare routines and take concrete steps towards the skin of your dreams.

Read on below for our take on skincare goal setting!

START SMALL

When you’re trying to think of what goals to set yourself for the new year, start small. Every year, people set huge resolutions that come to feel intimidating and often lead to abandonment. The trick to tackling big goals––such as finally beating acne or hyperpigmentation, for example––is to break them down into small, achievable changes.

For instead of saying you want to beat acne altogether (and feel discouraged when you haven’t after 2 weeks), set small, concrete goals, such as:

  • Booking a virtual consultation
  • Learning about the issues that affect your skin
  • Invest in a professional-grade product that is best suited for your needs
  • Build up from that product to a better-suited skincare routine
  • etc.

Doing this will make your goals more realistic and enjoyable, all while improving the likelihood of lasting change!

THINK POSITIVE––AND REALISTICALLY

Instead of making goals that focus on taking something away, such as eating less junk food, focus on adding something good (e.g. eating more healthy food). The end goal is still the same; however, by reframing it as a positive addition, it is proven and backed by research that you’ll be more likely to accomplish your goal.

Not quite sure what goals to tackle? Here are some of our favorites for 2023…

  • Clear out your cosmetics cabinet.

When did you last clear out your skincare? Chances are your cabinet may contain some skincare and cosmetics that have gone (way) past their shelf-life.

Look for the period-after-opening (PAO) symbol on your products, which usually looks like a little triangle or circle which has a number of months written inside or next to it. This number depicts how long the product should be disposed of after opening.

If they’re open and past their time, it’s a good idea to get rid of them. And instead of throwing them out, you can do your best to recycle them. Speaking of which…

  • Go greener.

Your skin deserves the best, but so does our planet!

A good resolution can be to choose skincare products that contain a higher percentage of natural and/or vegan ingredients. Professional-grade organic, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free products are just as beneficial to the skin as their opposite. At the same time, they help reduce waste and toxic substances leaked into our oceans; they protect animals; and they require much less energy and resources to make.

  • Improve your sleep schedule.

Better sleep does wonders not only for your entire body and mind, but also for your skin!

Making a point to build a better routine, including a regular wind-down period before bed, will help your body go into a deeper repair mode and regenerate skin cells. As a result, getting a good night’s sleep can literally help with improving your skin's elasticity and complexion.

Skipping sleep hours can also accelerate the skin aging process, increase wrinkles and reduce skin hydration. So if your goal is to achieve and maintain a healthy glow this year, make it one of your goals to get a good night’s sleep!
